Comments: Thank you for all the information. I've been stuck in a rut for a long time. I am going to try and apply some of this information. I am still fuzzy on the "chord theory" stuff. A interactive inter-net site that could ask more questions of the students to insure the concepts are clear and understood would be nice. Ex. You could ask a question like; What note is located on the 6th string 5th fret? If they answer incorrectly it would repeat the question, if they answered correctly it would progress to more difficult questions.Ex At what fret(s) is Bb located? I will be back to see if any of these ideas made any sence. Thanks again

Just yesterday I pulled out Sailin' Shoes and recorded it to cassette to listen to at work. "Lady in a turbin . . ." Well, what can I say, it's up there with "Nilsson sings Newman" on my all time list. I enjoyed your site, will be back. P.S. Though Tulsa is not too well known, I've lived here all my life and played with some great musician's over the years: Leon Russell, J.J. Cale, Roy Clark, Ronnie Dunn (2 years) of Brooks and Dunn, The Hager Twins, Pat McJimsey and others. I've got to practice the guitar now, thanks to you!

Comments: I really like your straight-forward approach. I had a Guitar teacher who taught a very interesting class on how to know your fretboard. He would have us play the note, looking at it, and sing (at pitch). For example, (sung)"A is the 5th fret of the sixth string". He then would have us close our eyes, pay attention to how our arms and fingers felt and play and sing again. Then once again with our eyes open. We did this for each A on the fretboard. Each night, the students would practice a new note. His theory (which seemed to work) caused us to associate sound with position and classification. We were also cautioned to only do this for 10 minutes. I have since quit taking lessons and have stagnated with standard barr chords and blues licks. I will be attempting to work through your book. Looks very interesting!

Is a spanish guitar with nylon strings, wide neck ect. but the lesson are for a steel string guitar which the strings are alot closer than what I have. Please if you have the time let me know if this is a real problem or something I could work with by practising more. Best regards,

Comments: Thank you for all of your time and effort in creating this excellent online "school". I greatly appreciate your "plain English" translations of musical concepts. At times, music seems so impenetrable with many strange words, notations, and equations. For the first time, I think I'm beginning to understand some of it! (Still could use some help--maybe diagrams--to fully grasp these 3rds, 5ths, 7ths--something a bit more familiar than those Roman numerals!) In addition to your upcoming book publishing venture, may I also suggest a video presentation of your material. Imagine the teaching power at your disposal with sounds and actual demonstrations being a possibility. Again, thank you for making this resource available to us. Best regards! Please keep on with it!

Comments: I am a small business owner and a grandmother. I purchased a new acoustical guitar last fall with the intentions of taking lessons. I can read music and took piano for 10 years, I even learned to play the clarinet. But it has been over 30 years since my last music lesson. I really want to learn to play the guitar, but it seems like such a large task. Fretting seems almost like learning to speak another language. I am also left handed. Do I need to re-string my guitar. I have been tempted to take the guitar back to the store several times. But I'd really like to master this instrument. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Comments: This site is excellent, I have been fooling around with an acoustic guitar for about a year, and just purchased an electric. Much that I have learned is through your so called parroting. I was invited to try out for a band and ran into the situation you described in the first lesson where I could not follow along with the rhythym by chord name. I have a question, could clarify what the fingering is in fig. 2.1, I assume you are talking about finger placement but the diagram does not seem to suggest where to place what fingers. Thanks again for the site.

The days playing in a band seem like a dream now. I had forgotten how sore your fingers are all the time when just starting out, (if I had remembered I might not have started over. :) Your site is so full of fantastic ideas, thoughts, suggestions, information, and knowledge it should win an award. Your advice for beginners is dead on the money, (which I consider myself to be again.) Your layout is great and you provide a terrific amount of motivation for the beginner. A site such as this is a dream for a novice guitar player and I, for one can't tell you how much it's appreciated. Thank you for loving music enough and caring about others to maintain such a site. The overhead must be tremendous. Thanks again, John

Comments: I'm a relatively new student and am taking lessons from a local teacher with my son. I am learning a lot from lots of sources and gotten lots from your Essential Guide. It's ideal for someone at my level: a student of a year-and-a-half who needs to know everthing all at once. I'm a Lutheran pastor and have a Pat Metheny model Ibanez hollow-body at home. I'm looking for a solid body electric to keep at the office so I can pick it up and play when I have a few minutes. I thought about a made-in-Japan strat on which I would upgrade the pick-ups. But, then I thought, I've got a tax refund coming, and maybe I would be better off buying a better instrument with a more pleasing and versitile sound, that will enjoy playing for a long time. I haven't been playing long enough to develop my own sound, so I don't know what exactly to look for, except to try a bunch of guitars, figuring I'll know the right one when it comes along. Do you have any suggestions?

I would recommend this site to just about anyone, even those who think they're pretty advanced. Thanks a lot. BK

Comments: I have been trying to learn the fretboard of my guitar for quite awhile, but with little success, plus music theory! Your guide has been very helpful also, very easy to understand! Thank you for all your work that you put into it. I would surely be interested in some random quizes on learning notes on the fretboard something like what they do to learn morse code. Like a picture of guitar fretboard and a red dot and then you must name the note. It could also play the note and you could set the time (speed it up or slow it down) and name the note! Just like in name that tune! Just something to think about! If you ever do it I would sure be interested in purchasing it or seeing it! Keep up the good work!!

Comments: I'm confident the Guide will improve my playing! A quick read has already provided several helpful suggestions. Assigning notes in the major scale a number from 1-15 is a remarkable suggestion. I had seen the scale pattern, and I had even tried to assign notes numbers (scale degrees) 1-7 for the first octave and 1-7 for the second octave. Visualizing and playing 9th, 11th, and 13th chords will, undoubtedly, be easier following this suggestion. Similarly, working out my own arpeggios will improve my ability to remember and play same. Singing what I play is an idea I'd read before; however, you state the most compelling reason for doing so. These are but a few of the great ideas that you've given me. Thanks! Tom Griffin

Comments: I'm 29, and I've been a guitar player for 18 years. The first 17 years I played licks, and basically pentatonic scales I learned myself while rewinding cassete tapes of Jimi Hendrix, Billy Gibbons, and Doc Watson. I learned their "chops", but not much about how music really 'works'. I've been learning theory for the last year. My playing has improved more in this last year than in the last 17 out together. The information on your site is very helpful. Thank you.
